What connects the Pointer Sisters' Jump (For My Love) to the Hi-NRG sound of the early eighties?
It's a question I'll be exploring over the coming weeks on The Twelve Inch. But musically, it all makes perfect sense. Just listen to this week's set!
We kick off with the Pointer Sisters and The Jacksons before Barry Manilow leads us straight (pun intended 😁) onto the gay dancefloor. And I've lined up some usual suspects: Lime, Hazell Dean, The Twins, Sylvester and Evelyn Thomas.
I'm not suggesting the Pointer Sisters were making music specifically for gay clubs. But it's fascinating how seamlessly their synth-funk connects with Hi-NRG. Different scenes, different audiences, but musically much closer than you might think.
Gay or straight, who cares when the music is this good?
One hour of glorious early-eighties dance music, pumping away at 134 BPM. Once again, absolutely no time for sitting down!
