One of my first sets with no fixed BPM. I start at 94 and slowly work my way up to 115. And there’s another first: the opening track is the DUB version of this week’s central song, not the club mix.
In this week’s Substack episode, I explain how a 1985 AOR song by Canadian rock band Saga got a dance remix and found a second (or should we say first? 😁) life on Belgium’s New Beat dancefloors three years later.
New Beat traditionally sat around 95–110/115 BPM. Saga’s “Take A Chance”? 186 BPM. 😁 The secret is its half-time feel: you can hear it as either a fast rock song or a slow dance track. Listen to the first transition and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.
