The third episode of my Can-Con series, and this time I zoom in on what happened after peak disco.
The US experienced its infamous disco backlash in 1979. Canada had its own backlash too, but not in Montréal. Disco continued there, albeit increasingly under a different name: dance music.
This week’s set translates that change musically. We zoom in on Joe La Greca, opening with two of his best-known productions: Carol Jiani and Lime. The first half continues with electronic dance music, including Patrick Cowley, Lipps Inc. and a few deeper Canadian cuts.
The second half turns to the other dominant force in early-eighties dance: funk, with The Jacksons, The Whispers, The Brothers Johnson and Harvey Mason, all sitting somewhere on the border between disco and the synth-funk that followed.
