The Twelve Inch 219 : Got To Give It Up : Disco/Eurodisco - 1977

This week’s central song, Marvin Gaye’s Got To Give It Up, sets the tone for the entire mix. It’s followed by another 1977 classic that clearly took a few cues from Marvin’s masterpiece: Quincy Jones’ Stuff Like That. And there’s a third record from the same period by an artist who had obviously been paying close attention as well: Sergio Mendes’ often-overlooked disco gem The Real Thing.
After that jazzy opening trio, Donna Summer brings us firmly back into disco territory with Spring Affair. The heart of this week’s mix is devoted to a selection of largely instrumental disco gems from 1977, before we head into a steaming finale of R&B-infused dancefloor classics.
From there, it’s up to Bionic Boogie to pave the way for the Bee Gees’ irresistible You Should Be Dancing, bringing this week’s dancefloor journey to a fitting close.
