This mix takes me right back to the early ’80s, when I was DJing local parties. That blend of slower-paced synth-funk, pop-dance, and New Wave crossovers was exactly what worked on European dancefloors back then, and I loved playing it.
I open with some solid (synth) funk. Right after the S.O.S. Band classic Just Be Good to Me, you’ll hear Whodini’s Haunted House of Rock and Yarbrough & Peoples’ brilliant Don’t Waste Your Time.
By the early ’80s, The Brothers Johnson had moved on from the slick Rod Temperton/Quincy Jones disco-funk sound and returned to rawer funk, You Keep Me Coming Back is one of their best, especially in the extended 12-inch version (listen to that bass guitar 😂).
Level 42 bridges us to the more pop-infused second half, where the Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love leads into Jellybean’s remix of Slippery People by Talking Heads.
The mix wraps up with Material and a one-hit wonder: Mia Frye.
