Dance Away” felt like an intriguing choice to kick off this week’s mixtape. I had two directions I could’ve taken: one was a “Mutant Disco” route, diving into late ’70s and early ’80s crossover remixes from post-disco and New Wave acts. The other was to place it at the start of an American disco set, and see whether it could hold its own alongside what was happening on U.S. dancefloors at the time.
Spoiler: it absolutely does.
The mix opens with the twelve-inch version of Dance Away, followed by Santana’s crossover groove One Love. From there, it’s full-on 1979 disco: the slick, funk-leaning productions that pointed toward the early ’80s, like The Brothers Johnson’s Stomp and Harvey Mason’s Groovin’ You. You’ll also hear Kleeer, Earth, Wind & Fire, Brenda Russell, and the set wraps up with Millie Jackson and Jackie Moore.
