This week’s mix is, in many ways, a prequel to the Cerrone set from two weeks ago. Cerrone helped bring the European sound into New York’s nightlife, but before that, the dancefloor belonged firmly to American disco.
Technically, “More, More, More” was a 1976 hit, peaking in the first half of the year. But most of this mix is made up of tracks from earlier, so you’ll hear how Andrea True was picking up on a trend that was already well underway. Disco Tex & the Sex-O-Lettes, Van McCoy, Shirley & Company, Bohannon, B.T. Express, and George McCrae had all paved the way in 1975 and 1974.
The disco feel had also started seeping into pop. Think ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” (I included a blend of the English and Spanish versions) and Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)”.
As always, there’s a dose of deeper tracks: Asha Puthli’s “Space Talk”, which clearly inspired Giorgio Moroder, and the French version of “Girls” by Moments & Whatnauts.
