The Twelve Inch 171 : Spellbound : Post-Punk/New-Wave/Electro - 1981

This week, I dive into early ’80s post-punk dance music—a time of wild creativity and shifting sounds. We open with the excellent 12” mix of “Spellbound” by Siouxsie & The Banshees, then move to The Glove, a side project from Robert Smith and Steven Severin, with their moody track “Like An Animal.”

From there, the German underground classic “Suicide Commando” by No More leads us into early electro, new wave, and New Romantic territory with tracks like Spandau Ballet’s “Reformation” and Visage’s “Frequency 7.”

It’s a global ride: alongside UK post-punk, we spotlight American New Wave (Our Daughters Wedding, Slow Children) and rare Spanish synth-pop with Van Cyborg’s “God’s Valley.”

We close with the goth energy of Sisters of Mercy (“Alice”), B-Movie, and Echo & The Bunnymen. At 146 BPM, this one’s a proper workout on the dancefloor. Enjoy
