Description
If you follow my work, you know I love exploring the borders of disco and ’80s music. Beyond the big hits, each country shaped these genres in its own way. Luigi gives us a unique view of Finland. I’ll let him explain:
Welcome to a trip back to 1980s Finland, made for my friend Pe Dupré to celebrate Finland’s Independence Day on 6 December 2025. The Finland of the ’80s was conservative and introverted, and electronic music was dismissed as ‘not real,’ so it rarely appeared in mainstream media. But the underground was alive: new wave, post-punk, and the fading yet influential disco-schlager tradition.
This mix reflects that world: disco-schlager like Kari Tapio’s ‘Olen suomalainen,’ Meiju Suvas’s ‘Tää onnea on,’ sharp commentary from Anita Hirvonen, funk from Steel City and Mad Lindell, and post-punk from Musta Paraati, Geisha and Belaboris. I also added newer synth-pop with an ’80s feel and a 1970s gem: Freeman’s classic ‘Ajetaan tandemilla.’
