Description
Désenchantée is our gateway into the rich and varied world of early-’90s European dance music.
There’s also a nice connection to current events in this week’s mix. The second track is New Order’s World in Motion, recorded with the England national football team for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. At the time of writing, England is once again through to the semi-finals, matching their achievement of 1990—and who knows, perhaps they’ll go one step further this time.
Together with Marc Almond’s Jacky(in the Phil Harding remix), it completes this week’s opening trio.
The first half hour is packed with European dance classics from Erasure, Utah Saints, Fierce Ruling Diva and U96, including their era-defining smash Das Boot.
The second half of the mix shifts slightly towards the poppier side of the spectrum with Kylie Minogue, Beckie Bell and Brothers In Rhythm, before closing with a few perfect examples of the piano house sound that dominated dancefloors in the early ‘90s.
