Rock The Boat by the Hues Corporation was one of the very first disco hits. This was a time well before twelve inches and extended versions, when DJs had to be inventive, constantly searching for dance records and blending them into seamless sets. This week’s mixtape is my take on that era.
Like the DJs of 1974, I cast the net wide. You’ll hear Soul, Funk, Jazz-Funk and the Philly Sound. It begins with the two records that ruled the Hot 100 that summer: Hues Corporation’s Rock The Boat and George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby, followed by The Sweet Inspirations, Barry White and The Love Unlimited Orchestra.
Expect deep cuts too, including Dorothy Morrison’s Rain, a favourite of David Mancuso at The Loft, Sister Sledge’s Mama Never Told Me and Zulema’s Giving Up. Donald Byrd and Kool & The Gang lead us into a finale featuring Freda Payne, The O’Jays, Eddie Kendricks, The Whispers and Double Exposure.
