The Twelve Inch 212 : Let's Clean Up The Ghetto : Disco/Funk/Soul - 1977

This week’s central song is our gateway into a set filled with R&B-based disco from the era just before Saturday Night Fever changed everything. The opening and closing are pure Philadelphia sound. “Let’s Clean Up The Ghetto” is followed by People’s Choice with “Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)”, a song blessed with the same kind of haunting bassline that made their first hit “Do It Any Way You Wanna” such an early disco staple.

The finale is pure Philly soul with Teddy Pendergrass, Double Exposure and First Choice. In between, there’s a wide variety of disco and funk. We start with a selection of Latin-tinged disco by Samba Soul, Afro Cuban Band, Marboo and the Mike Theodore Orchestra. Via John Davis and the Monster Orchestra and Ashford & Simpson, we move into a number of pure mid-seventies funk gems like “Open Sesame” by Kool & The Gang and “Movin’” by Brass Construction.

And to quote the latter, movin’ is exactly what you’ll be doing while listening to this set.
