The Twelve Inch 209 : You're The One For Me : Post-Disco/Funk - 1982

This week’s mixtape takes us back to the early eighties dancefloor and the sound of clubs like the Paradise Garage. Capturing the exact atmosphere of any club from that era is never easy, as the music could vary wildly depending on the DJ behind the decks that night.

Yet when people think of the Paradise Garage, they think of Larry Levan and the groove-heavy sound he championed. That is the mood of this week’s mix. It is not quite the synth-funk we later came to associate with the eighties, but it is not disco either. It sits in that fascinating space we now call post-disco, though to most ears it still sounds very much like disco 😁

The set opens, of course, with this week’s featured track, D Train’s “You’re The One For Me,” followed by funk gems from 1981-82 including Instant Funk, Skyy and Sandy Kerr. You will also hear early remix magic from François K, Shep Pettibone and Larry Levan himself.
