Guitars and disco never had the easiest relationship. “I Was Made For Loving You” wasn’t the only attempt at blending the two, but most efforts fell flat, too rocky for the dancefloor, too disco for rock fans. Still, a few tracks managed to stand out, and I’ve included some of those in this week’s mix.
One example is the second track: Paul Sabu, who later made a name as a rock producer in the eighties, actually started out with some excellent disco cuts. The transition from disco to rock in his career feels almost comical in hindsight. Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte also toyed with guitar-driven disco, Moroder with Cher’s “Git Down (Guitar Groupie)”, the B-side of “Hell On Wheels”, and Bellotte with Steve Bender (yes, the bald singer from Dschinghis Khan).
The second half of the mix heads back to classic disco territory, with Slick, Tania Gardner, and Dan Hartman.
