The Twelve Inch 166 : Change : Disco/Eurodisco/Hi-NRG/Boogie - 1977

1977 marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of disco. On the cusp of Saturday Night Fever, disco was becoming truly ubiquitous. Nightclubs were booming, and the demand for fresh tracks skyrocketed. What began as an underground movement was rapidly transforming into a full-blown industry, and everyone wanted a piece of the action.

The lush, orchestral Philadelphia sound was beginning to lose its dominance, giving way to the rise of electronic instruments and the more cost-effective Eurodisco. This transition is a key theme in this week’s episode, and the accompanying mixtape serves as the soundtrack to that story.

We kick off the mix with the fantastic Richie Rivera 12-inch version of Zulema’s “Change.” The first half dives deep into the classic disco sound, rich, soulful, and full of groove & latin rhythms.
