Description
This weekly 1 hour beatmix accompanies my Substack newsletter that highlights 1 twelve inch each week. This week I tell the story of "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner and Westend Records. "Heartbeat" is a 100 BPM track and was released in a period were every song with a BPM under, let's say, 115 BPM was considered unsuitable by the dj's. Larry Levan defied the trend and the song became a big success on the dance floor of the Paradise Garage... This week's mix kicks off with Heartbeat and takes us in different directions. There’s funk with The Jacksons and Gwen McRae, Philadelphia R&B with Teddy Pendergrass and Archie Bell. I cross-over to Eastcoast pop with The Climax Blues Band and the fantastic “Georgy Porgy” by Toto with (then) label mate Cheryl Lynn. And you’ll get calypso from the Kid Creole/Ron Rodgers produced Gichy Dan and I even added “Take Me To The River” by the “Talking Heads”. A perfect way to start a spring weekend. Enjoy !
