18.10.16 :: Cover versions remain fascinating as our culture constantly recycles, reanalyzes, pillages, reuses the past, which was already a copy of a copy—but a unique one. Covers are a testament to history & a willful desire to dismantle the mystery of a successful tune to learn from it. All artists copy their influences before converting that into something of their own. Covers fascinate listeners: how can classic tunes & their history be interpreted / deconstructed. Think of it as unwrapping a present & then rewrapping it to give to someone else. I've tried to tread a fine line: avoiding the delirious atrocious versions [Shatner], versions that basically trash the originals & become instant classics of bad-is-good. What we haveazre distinctive songs altered or improved upon by the cover artist. It is a dialectic of now & then. I have also devoted a good hour to cover versions by people I know & admire*.
