A WILD BEST-OF MIX complete with Nabokov rant... Every year the reputable / amiable alternative music zine Perfect Sound Forever [http://www.furious.com/perfect/2019writerspoll.html / scroll down] collects the Best Ofs of that year’s contributing writers. I, being a listmaker of the first hour [see my forthcoming book LISTFULL], participate in these lists because they offer a mnemonic overview of the year. I remember listening to countdowns of the top 40, writing down each tune, picking up local radio Top 40 lists at the mall. Wondered why great songs sometimes did not get higher than 35, why it was only 40 when there were certainly way more to choose from. With PSF I can never keep it to “new” releases because for me “new” can be 40 years old if I am hearing it for the first time. The lists in PSF are testimony to the fact that, despite what mainstream pop culture displays to the contrary, there is plenty, way more than plenty of great sounds out there ignored by conventional ears.
