WARNING: This WTM radio program requires focused, intense listening. In conjunction with the David Tudor Memorial Competition of 4.33 at the Faithful Festival in Berlin, Nov. 2014, we present a special noisy WTM on this renowned John Cage piece. Composed in 1952 & performed by David Tudor for an artsy crowd in Woodstock, it was greeted with bafflement & denunciations. We hear the 10 audio finalists & 10 versions inc. Zappa, Tudor, Cage, piece + other soundmakers who’ve addressed silence inc. If, Bwana, Alan Licht, Marc Ribot, GenKen Montgomery, Black Sifichi, Paloma Jet, Mystic Moods Orchestra, Hans Van Koolwijk... It's not about silence but about listening & hearing how silence is compromised by environmental ambiences & provokes social anxiety. I've noticed 2 tendencies: I can thrive in a silent hermetic setting. But I've had 2 girlfriends who gathered sustenance, integrity & power from their silence in social situations, which led me to nervous babbling to fill their silences...
