BUILDING YOUR OWN SIGNATURE SOUND
I heard once that if you are able to recognize a DJ just by his sound and not see him behing the decks, than this DJ has established his own signature sound.
For me it's very important for a DJ to build a unique sound which is his expression of music. In order to do this, there is much preparation and research involved.
Imitating other artists will not get you very far. Playing a sound that other people like or following the commercial trends, won't do the job either.
Becoming an artist means you are good at your art, part of it is being unique and stand out from others.
You can get inspired by other Dj's and Producers of course, but you have to preserve your own taste and style of music in your performances.
That is what i am trying to do with my Underground Vault Project, playing the House Music i love the most, the original Chicago and Underground House style.
