"The Raft of the Madusa",painting by Théodore Géricault depicting shipwrecked soldiers and civilians of the "Méduse" a french ship that sank on the coast of West Africa. It was a big scandal at the time, not only because they had to refer to cannibalism in order survive but also because of the inefficiency and the corruption of/in the french navy.
Géricault was fascinated by the theme and spent hours in morgues to get the color of putrifying bodies right. The painting however was not well received by the public.
