Description
As always at this time of year, my favorite writing/music curatorial site, Said the Gramaphone, has reviewed their year in music & selected 100 of the most notable tunes. Each year I see that collection as a guide to anything I may have missed & the opportunity to assemble my own narrative out of the riches on display.
With this 2018 review you’ll find the heady, hopeful tunes crowd into the first half; beats get darker & more danceable by the midpoint; at the end, things turn philosophical: the self-flaying insights of James Blake & Major Lazer, the philosophical long-view offered by Sandro Perri, Jos. Shabason’s nearly-universal conclusions on therapy: we're all pretenders relying on 'game' to get us thru. So: something for everyone (lyrically that is) & memorable tunes all the way thru, also including contributions from Chaka Khan, Robyn, Drake (NSFW), Nicholas Jaar (AAL) & more.
