Welcome to Episode 4 of my new series 'The New Jazz Cool' where this time I focus on one of my favourite types of Jazz, Jazzy Hip Hop. This type of jazz that grew out of the Dj culture of the 80's and 90's where classic Jazz Records were sampled by Djs and Producers to make something new that gave an insistent nod to the past. Anyone remember Us3 with their version of Cantaloup!
This set is about 'now' though and I believe the producers in this mix, with a particular nod to The Jazz Jousters, are not only melding classic jazz beats and samples, but they are also encompassing the trip hop sounds that Dj Krush, Massive Attack and Tricky pushed in the 90's, but taking it further and in their bedrooms, lofts and home studios pushing the boundaries of the technology and internet culture that they have in front of them, while keeping one eye on the past and the other on the future.
