Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (born 2 October 1951), known as Sting, is an acclaimed English musician and actor. He first gained prominence as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and bassist for The Police from 1977 to 1986, before launching a diverse solo career influenced by rock, jazz, reggae, classical, new-age, and worldbeat.
Sting has sold more than 100 million records across his solo work and his time with The Police. His accolades include three Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Academy Award nominations, and 17 Grammy Awards.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Police in 2003. Other honours include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, a CBE for services to music, the Kennedy Centre Honours, the Polar Music Prize, and recognition as an Ivor Novello Fellow in 2023.
