Prince Rogers Nelson (1958–2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, and actor, widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of his era and a pioneer of the Minneapolis sound. Born in Minneapolis, he signed with Warner Bros. Records at 18 and soon earned critical acclaim with Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His breakthrough came in 1984 when Purple Rain, its soundtrack, and “When Doves Cry” simultaneously topped the US film, album, and singles charts, with the album spending six months at No.1 and winning an Academy Award. After disbanding the Revolution, he released the double album Sign o’ the Times (1987), widely considered his greatest work.
