Steven Patrick Morrissey (born 22 May 1959) is an English singer and songwriter who rose to prominence as the frontman and principal lyricist of The Smiths (1982–1987). Following the band’s dissolution, he established a successful solo career, debuting with Viva Hate (1988) and releasing a series of UK Top Ten albums including Kill Uncle (1991), Your Arsenal (1992), and Vauxhall and I (1994). Known for his baritone voice and distinctive lyrical style, Morrissey’s work frequently explores themes of alienation, desire, social dissent, and dark humour. After a quieter period in the late 1990s, he returned with the critically and commercially successful You Are the Quarry (2004), followed by several further studio albums. Alongside music, Morrissey has published an autobiography (2013) and a debut novel, List of the Lost (2015).
