Description
Jamiroquai are an English acid‑jazz and funk band formed in London in 1992 and led by vocalist Jay Kay, the group’s sole constant member. Emerging from the 1990s London funk and acid‑jazz scene, they evolved from their early acid‑jazz foundations to incorporate elements of rock, disco, electronic, and Latin music, while frequently addressing social and environmental themes in their lyrics. After debuting with Acid Jazz Records, the band achieved mainstream success under Sony, earning three UK number‑one albums; Emergency on Planet Earth (1993), Synkronized (1999), and A Funk Odyssey (2001), alongside the chart‑topping single “Deeper Underground” (1998). By 2017, Jamiroquai had sold over 26 million albums worldwide, with their 1996 release Travelling Without Moving recognised by Guinness World Records as the best‑selling funk album in history, further propelled by the award‑winning “Virtual Insanity” music video, which earned MTV’s Video of the Year in 1997 and a Grammy Award in 1998.
