Description
Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and principal songwriter Steve Harris. Following several early line‑up changes, the band’s long‑standing configuration has comprised Harris, lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, drummer Nicko McBrain, and guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers. As pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal, Iron Maiden achieved major commercial success with a series of Gold and Platinum albums in the UK and US, including Iron Maiden (1980), Killers (1981), and The Number of the Beast (1982). The arrival of Dickinson in 1981, replacing Paul Di’Anno, marked a pivotal moment that helped establish the band as one of the most influential acts in heavy metal history. The Number of the Beast remains one of the genre’s most successful albums, with global sales approaching 20 million copies.
