Depeche Mode are an English electronic band formed in Basildon, Essex, in 1980. Originally comprising Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke, the group has operated as a duo of Gahan and Gore since 2022. Following their 1981 debut album Speak & Spell, written primarily by Clarke during the height of the British new wave and MTV‑driven Second British Invasion, Clarke departed to form Yazoo and later Erasure. With Gore assuming songwriting duties, the remaining trio released A Broken Frame (1982) before recruiting Alan Wilder, who helped shape a line-up that endured until 1995 and produced influential albums including Construction Time Again (1983), Some Great Reward (1984), Black Celebration (1986) and Music for the Masses (1987). By the late 1980s, the band had become a defining force in alternative music, exemplified by their landmark 1988 Pasadena Rose Bowl concert, which drew an audience of more than 60,000.
