St Sidwell’s Community Centre is located in a converted church that was built in 1958, after the earlier church that stood on our site was bombed in the Baedeker Blitz in May 1942. Exeter is renowned as a historical city but any visitors to Sidwell Street would be hard-pressed to find any evidence of the rich local heritage: there are no visible historical buildings, no historical interpretation displays on the streets, no visits by the local Red Coat guides, no listed buildings.
However, despite current appearances, the site and the street have a long and rich history stretching back to the Anglo Saxon period.
Our Heritage Lottery Funded project ‘Reviving Lost History and Building Community’ is researching the history of St Sidwell’s and the area, running local heritage events and creating permanent heritage displays until summer 2017
