African American musical creativity has fuelled the modern music industry.
Recording technology was almost totally in the hands of white Americans.
The 1900–1920s records discriminated racially with cultural theft.of black musical ideas with reluctance of Blacks making records themselves.
By 1920 the only black voice to be recorded by any major company was Bert Williams (Columbia) and Mamie Smith (OKeh).
One man, Harry Herbert Pace, was aware of this and created Pace Phonographic Corporation labelled as Black Swan.
Right up to the 1980's African-Americans struggled to have any real control or ownership in the music business.
