The Casbah - Birthplace of Merseybeat

By Barrybee

Description

The Casbah - Birthplace of Merseybeat, celebrates this hugely significant venue.
The Beatles enjoyed a residency here prior to their known success at the Cavern Club.
Presented by original Beatles' drummer Pete Best whose mother Mona both owned and ran the club.
From the basement of the Best family home it was distinctive as it opened as a strictly Rock'n'Roll venue.
The majority of Liverpool clubs in the late 50's ran as Jazz, Folk & Country music.
Exploring the history of the club (decorated by The Beatles and now awarded Blue Plaque status) and to what became to be known as Merseybeat.
Contributions from Merseybeat newspaper founder Bill Harry, Bernie Grindley, Mike Pender ( The Searchers), Georgie Spruce (aka Earl Preston), Howie Casey (Derry & the Seniors) and Geoff Nugent (The Undertakers).
The programme features an added contribution from Sir Paul McCartney.
