The name “Katonte”, which in Bemba means “being warm together”, is the name of a village in eastern Masaiti District in Copperbelt Province. The Village is close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), roughly between the towns of Ndola and Kapiri Mposhi, but it is some 35 Km from the nearest rural clinic. Women and child morbidity and mortality are thought to suffer especially as a result. The Department of Health has constructed a new clinic there, but it is currently inoperable owing to the lack of staff housing. KHP’s initial target is to construct a house, and to contribute to equipping the clinic, so that staff can be posted and it can “open for business”.
