Every so often I have to do a doom-gloom show to shake my ghosts, to shed the gray, to confront increased economic & political tensions that only music can confront & heal. I hope. The music that often addresses this despondency is dub because it is both hopeful & not unnecessarily frivolous or upbeat. It is both hopeful and realistic, this steps over into dubstep, the best of which [when its not formulaic] deals with dark sci-fi imagery that seems to address our current malaise. That it can be subversive is indicated by its perpetual marginality. What the best dub – be it roots, speculative or electronic – confronts concerns & fears that we all have to face & it does so by maintaining an equilibrium between realism & promise, between dejection & rejoicing, intelligent enough to be emotional about the fact that the 1 contains the other.
