Join Alice-Kanako on the WOH Radio stage for “My Sonic Memoir: Exploring Japanese Gender Nonconformity Through Music”. Despite stifling pressure from the socially conservative mainstream, artists freely expressing their nonconforming gender can be found across the span of Japanese culture.

Alice-Kanako will take the listener on a journey, connecting artists to snapshots from my life while exploring the socio-political context surrounding their genres. The Buddhist gender-fluid deity Kannon, dramatic enka, R&B, and underground counter cultural figures from the electronic and punk scenes, all intertwined with dreamlike soundscaping and audio from home videos of my childhood trips to Japan.
