Dare Balogun is a DJ, writer and cultural archivist based in London. For this show, he presents Roots to Rhythm: The Big Three, a carefully curated musical journey through Highlife, Soukous, and Makossa.
Described as the “holy trinity of Sub-Saharan African dance music,” these genres are more than just sonic traditions, they are living, breathing cultural movements that have defined how Africa and its diaspora have moved, danced, and told stories for generations.
Dare weaves personal history, deep cultural context, and rare recordings into a powerful tribute to African rhythm. From the philosophical guitar band Highlife of Stephen Osita Osadebe, to the electrified dancefloor fire of Rogana Ottah, from Parisian Soukous experiments by Youlou Mabiala and Kass-Kass, to the transcendent joy of Cameroonian queen Charlotte Mbango.
