Broadcast from Addis Ababa on Muzikawi Radio, this episode features Bethel Biru, an illustrator and music journalist from Houston, Texas. Currently developing a personal syllabus titled Blackberry Molasses, Bethel is exploring Black music as a living archive and the ways sound preserves memory, shapes identity, and carries cultural knowledge across generations.
For this special selection, Bethel shares songs that accompanied her childhood summers in Ethiopia and have remained with her ever since. These are the songs she returns to when nostalgia calls, offering a window into the memories, feelings, and experiences that continue to resonate through them. It's an intimate invitation to experience Ethiopian music through the sounds that have shaped her sense of home and belonging.
