Description
Mariam is a London-based filmmaker, radio DJ and migrant rights campaigner whose monthly show on Loose FM journeys across continents and genres, exploring the social and political movements that shape the music she loves. Blending music with storytelling, she explores resistance, community and overlooked histories from around the world.
Songs in the Shadows traces the stories of music in post-revolutionary Iran, where popular music was outlawed after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and forced into underground networks, private homes and exile. Through the stories of legendary musicians such as Kourosh Yaghmaei, contemporary protest songs, underground rappers and rock bands, Mariam reveals how music has endured as a vital language of resistance under censorship. Live from WOH Radio stage, she explores how communities continue to gather and create despite repression, illuminating music's power to preserve culture, sustain hope and imagine freedom.
