Description
BobaFatt's fortnightly Friday night warmer-upper is back to set off your weekend. Tonight, a special show throwing back to the era of New Jack Swing, dedicated to the late Barry Michael Cooper.
In 1987, Barry wrote an article for The Village Voice about producer Teddy Riley, where he first coined the phrase 'New Jack Swing'. A hybrid sound of street soul, hip hop and rnb. In the UK it was called 'Swingbeat' for a spell.
A sub-genre built by producers like the afore-mentioned Teddy Riley, LA & Babyface, Jam & Lewis and Dallas Austin. Its big hitters included arists like Bobby Brown, Guy, Blackstreet, Heavy D & Jodeci, and the Queens of 'New Jill Swing', such as Mary J Blige, EnVogue, SWV & TLC.
Barry Michael Cooper also wrote screenplays for the 'Harlem trilogy'; Above The Rim, Sugar Hill & most notably New Jack City.
Pre Soulquarian neo-soul, this 2-hour show features a mix of 80 tracks from that era; late '80s - mid '90s.
Turn it up to the red, your neighbours will love it.
