Kaleidoscopic psychedelia from one of the DJs of the decade so far.
While it might feel early to call bets on leading figures of the 2020s in electronic music, Kia Sydney, best known simply as Kia, is undeniably one of them.
Starting out in Naarm's (Melbourne) underground scene in the mid-2010s, Sydney credits a trip to the influential deep techno Japanese festival, Labyrinth, as the inspiration behind her sound. But her style shares as much with DJ Nobu and Donato Dozzy as modern practitioners like Priori and Beatrice M.
Her brainchild, Animalia, is living proof of a fruitful shift in the 2020s: less serious, perhaps, but more open-minded and worldly, and one that offers a far more promising vision of dance music. Her RA Podcast showcases this plurality of sounds—from Monolake and Enya to OK EG and Cousin—in abundance, and serves as confirmation that her kaleidoscopic style is the mark of a generational talent.
