Javier Wallis is not interested in repeating the familiar. Drawing on the personal and political, his work as Wilderness Hymnal could be located at the crossroads between Dead Can Dance, Bjork, Blueneck and Scott Walker. Immersive and evolving, here he splices old modes into a new idiom, seeking intense connection with the audience by blurring the lines between seething psychedelic drone, operatic turmoil, shapeshifting post-rock and eerie, apocalyptic piano music.
