Description
With the Red Bull Music Festival Chicago happening throughout November, Mafalda digs into the Chess catalog, the iconic jazz, soul and blues label. Founded in 1950 by brothers Phil and Leonard Chess, Chess records released jazz, blues, psychedelic soul, R&B, gospel and soul music for 20 years, and has gone on to influence generations of musicians and producers to this day. In this episode you’ll hear incredible guitars and string arrangements, many of which were penned by Charles Stepney, who produced, played, conducted and arranged countless recording sessions for the label. Rotary Connection, Terry Callier, Howling Wolf, Etta James and many others — we'll start with "Uhuru" by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, which also features Maurice White before he formed Earth, Wind and Fire. Enjoy the spectrum of psychedelic soul, blues, jazz and rock that is Chess.
