In this month’s edition of Sound Obsession, we delve into the wondrous world of synthesisers and explore the music of production and engineering duo Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff. Excited by the possibilities of synthesizer development, the pair formed Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, releasing two albums of highly original music in 1971 and 1972. The name was an acronym of an analog synth designed and built by Cecil — the result was a synth on which each note sounded like a different instrument. A dazzled Stevie Wonder instantly recruited Margouleff and Cecil to his cause, making them co-producers on his series of classic albums, from _Music of My Mind_ through to _Fulfillingness’ First Finale_. Margouleff and Cecil also had long-standing relationships with the Isley Brothers and Gil Scott-Heron, as well as with Steve Hillage, Dave Mason, Quincy Jones and many others.
