For all the ink that’s been devoted to the Paradise Garage, Zanzibar and all of the other legendary East Coast clubs of the mid- to late 1980s, much of the attention has focused on the diverse social dynamics and otherworldly atmosphere inside these nightspots. The music, on the other hand, is often something of a side note, a surprising phenomenon that’s intensified by the fact that only a handful of mixes from the period have survived. As such, knowing exactly what these clubs actually sounded like remains something of a mystery. Enter Kirk Degiorgio, who’s dug through his record bins and pulled out an assortment of the best East Coast garage tracks that dropped between 1985 to 1987.
