Today marks the 35th anniversary of the release of _Wild Style_, the iconic 1983 movie that introduced the world to the nascent hip-hop movement brewing in the South Bronx and infecting the rest of NYC. Starring real-life graf writer Lee Quiñones as Zoro and FUN Gallery owner Patti Astor as an uptown journalist, the film was a first peek at the work of first-wave graffiti artists like Dondi, Zephyr and Lady Pink and rappers like Grandmaster Flash, the Cold Crush Brothers and Busy Bee Starski. Today's show pays tribute to the film: Chairman Mao talks to director Charlie Ahearn and Vivian speaks with iconic NYC graffiti writer Lady Pink, plus we listen to some music from the film by Fab 5 Freddy and Grandwizard Theodore and round things out with graffiti-inspired cuts like Company Flow's "Lune TNS" and Black Flag's "Spray Paint the Walls."
