Description
Roller skating has lost its popularity with the mainstream, but in cities like Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit, skate culture has remained a vibrant, cherished haven in the black community. In Detroit, it's become inseparable from the city's cultural identity and is an integral element in its social history. Nightly, groups of skaters hit the rink, practicing elaborate routines and showing off the signature Detroit style — endlessly smooth rolls and funky half-turns — while DJs spin disco, funk, R&B and hip-hop. In the first half of the show, Vivian honors this treasured pastime with two men who've become synonymous with roller skating in Detroit: Rollercade owner Kyle Black and Rockin' Richard Houston AKA The Godfather of Skating.
