Description
From reggaeton’s top of the pop charts to underground neo-perreo, to Latin trap, bachata, and Dominican dembow, the Latinx music industry has moved from fringe “crossover,” to mainstream fixture. Today, guest host Eddie Cepeda, who’s filling in for Vivian as she makes her way to Barcelona for Sonar, will take a look at the history of the genre-crossing over, early reggaeton chart success in the mid-aughts, and the current state of Latinx music’s domination. He’ll begin the conversation with one of the Latinx music industry's newest stars, the queer, Domincan-born artist Rubby. Raised in Washington Heights, Rubby grew up in a musical household and from an early age found comfort in the sense of community it fostered. As a solo artist, he’s used reggaeton and dembow riddims of his native home to explore his gender, sexuality and his sense of place in the broader Latinx community.
