The "DMV," AKA the DC Metro area encompassing Washington, DC, Maryland and northern Virginia, is home to go-go, a percussive strain of funk with a never-ending beat that "just goes and goes." Popularized in the 1970s and '80s, the regional sound pairs bouncy, click-clacking rhythms with elements of hip-hop and blues — the roots of go-go cannot be traced to a single source, but many cite Chuck Brown, known as “The Godfather of go-go.” The evolution of go-go to modern day hip-hop involves a wide range of global influences channeled through the DMV lens. Today, guest host and DC-area native Marcus J. Moore welcomes Grammy-nominated (and fellow native) Kokayi in to showcase marquee and lesser-known artists, assess current trends and discuss what the future holds.
