Description
In 2014 the crackly, tender vocals of an unknown Chicago singer named Jean Deaux began popping on tracks from rising rappers and R&B vocalists such as Sampha, Isaiah Rashad, Mick Jenkins, Saba, Mykki Blanco and Smino. Later that same year, Jean Deaux released her first single, a house-heavy cut which was quickly followed by a more sultry, downtempo one. The range of sounds that the young poet traversed over these two tracks illustrated her deft rhythms and set the stage. Four years on, with a bevy of singles and collaborations under her belt, Jean Deaux has released her long-awaited debut EP, _Kash_. On the collection of nine tracks, the 23-year-old confidently jumps between punk, pop, hip-hop and R&B while tackling life's tribulations with poised confidence. She'll call into the studio today to discuss the trials she faced to get here, working with fellow rising artists like Kari Faux and Ravyn Lenae and collaborating with Saba, and maybe she'll even drop a pun or two.
