Trap en español, AKA Latin trap, has fully infiltrated the mainstream — Spanish-language hits laced with tinny hi-hats and TR-808 drums have dominated YouTube charts of late with hundreds of millions of streams. But while Puerto Rican stars like Bad Bunny and Ozuna lead trend pieces and flex at the Latin Grammys, the Dominican-Americans in New York who first started the wave are mostly overlooked. On today's Peak Time, Matthew Ismael Ruiz fills in for Vivian Host and explores the progenitors of the movement with DJ Flipstar, an early champion in the NYC club scene. Matthew also speaks with _Remezcla_ editors Isabelia Herrera and Joel Moya about the cultural quirks that color the dynamic between Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the US.
